Danny Gabrielli bringing back a kick vs. DC in 2010
After 6 months of preparations, the week of the LPD Electrical Trans-Atlantic challenge is here at last! Philadelphia Fight will this week become the first ever American club rugby league side to tour the UK and Wigan Riversiders will be the first British team to play an American club side on home soil.
The game is to be played at Robin Park Arena, Wigan at 7:30 on Thursday 21st April and has generated much excitement in the town. The game sees Swinton coach Steve McCormack (who will act as Philadelphia’s guest coach for the duration of their stay) take on childhood friend in Wigan Riversiders player-coach Anthony Murray. The Fight also feature several players who have converted from American Football to Rugby League, one such player being 250lbDan Gabrielli who represented his divisional conference in the positions of both ‘linebacker’ and ‘longsnapper’. Hopefully he has mastered the art of passing backwards by now, claiming the momentum rule might be a bit much even for Stevo.
Tickets will be available on the door priced £4 adults, £2 children or a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) for £10. Doors open at 6:30 and the pre-match entertainment will feature the Wigan Warriors Cheerleaders, Max the Mascot and national anthems performed by local singers for both teams. There will also be a minutes silence held prior to the kick off for local man Ian Molyneux who was recently shot dead whilst serving aboard submarine HMS Astute, he was a close friend of one of the Riversiders players.
