Hollywood star Russell Crowe is keeping a close eye on the American National Rugby League playoffs and seems to have more than just a passing interest in them.
The actor tweeted with AMNRL president David Niu in the early hours of Sunday following the opening round of the 2010 postseason.
The quarterfinals saw wins by the Aston Bulls, New Haven Warriors and New York Knights, which have set up some potentially thrilling semifinals.
When told that the Bulls would be traveling to Jacksonville to face the Axemen, Crowe tweeted; “Go the Axemen!!”
The native New Zealander was last in north Florida for the first Rugby League International Challenge match between South Sydney and Leeds in 2008.
Crowe has a controlling interest in the Rabbitohs club.
And as a sidebar to the AMNRL playoffs, Aston’s ex-NRL, Australian and Queensland State of Origin star Daniel Wagon is in line to complete a rare, if unprecedented, feat should the Bulls make the Grand Final on August 28 in Conshohocken, PA.
Should Aston knock off the Axemen this coming Saturday and go on to play in the title decider, he will have played in championships on three continents – Australia, Europe and North America.
Wagon played for Parramatta in the 2001 NRL Grand Final and for the Limoux Grizzlies in the 2009 French Elite 1 championship.
